Orthopaedic Institute of Medicine (OIOM)

The American Orthopaedic Association’s Orthopaedic Institute of Medicine (OIOM) has released the results of an in-depth study into the challenges surrounding Emergency Department (ED) coverage. The report also provides possible solutions and recommendations for addressing this crisis.

According to a survey conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians, three-quarters of ED medical directors reported that their hospitals have inadequate on-call specialist coverage and another survey indicated that 42% of ED administrators believe the lack of specialty coverage in the ED posed a significant risk to patients.

Providing emergency care on an on-call basis has become unattractive to many specialists in critical disciplines such as orthopaedics. The OIOM explored these issues and, by providing solutions, hopes to make “taking call” more palatable.

This report and the activities of the OIOM Task Force represent the most comprehensive approach of this issue to date and the only treatise offering a variety of possible solutions to the crisis of ED Call Coverage.  We believe this information will be helpful to the orthopaedic community, but may also be valuable to other specialties facing similar coverage issues.

About the Orthopaedic Institute of Medicine (OIOM)
The OIOM operates independently of the AOA, but the topics the OIOM Council and its task forces tackle are important leadership issues which support the AOA mission. Critical and controversial issues such as ED Coverage require attention to allow the orthopaedic profession to continue to provide the best patient care available. The AOA is pleased to help support the OIOM initiative.
