The 2009 ABC Traveling Fellows were selected after an interview process at the 2008 AOA/COA Annual Meeting in Quebec City. Traveling as a group, the ABC Fellows toured prominent orthopaedic institutions across the United Kingdom and South Africa for five weeks in the Spring of 2009. Kevin J. Bozic, MD, MBA

Dr. Bozic is an Associate Professor in Residence in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Bozic’s clinical interests are in complex hip and knee reconstruction, and in minimally invasive techniques for total hip and knee replacement. His research interests are broadly in the fields of health policy and health care services research, and specifically in the areas of health care technology assessment, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the impact of health care delivery reform on cost and quality. Dr. Bozic has received the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation’s Clinical Research Award and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Clinician-Scientist Traveling Fellowship Award for his work in Economic Evaluation of Total Joint Arthroplasty.

Leesa M. Galatz, MD
Washington University, St Louis, MO
Dr. Galatz is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington Unversity, Barnes- Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Her research interests focus on rotator cuff healing, both clinical and basic science. She is the recipient of six peer reviewed grant awards in support of her basic science studies of tendon to bone healing including an OREF Career Development Award. In 2007, she was an ASES European Shoulder and Elbow Traveling Fellow. Dr. Galatz is currently an AAOS Board Member-at-Large. She serves on several hospital and specialty society committees. In addition to numerous peer reviewed publications, Dr. Galatz has written and/or edited several texts including the recent Orthopedic Knowledge Update 3 for Shoulder and Elbow. She recently received the Lee T. Ford Award for academic achievement from the Orthopedic Department at Washington University.

Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD

Dr. Haydon is an orthopaedic oncologist at the University of Chicago, and associate director of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory. His research interests include stem cell/sarcoma biology, bone regeneration and archaeology.

William M. Mihalko, MD, PhD
Campbell Clinic, Memphis, TN
Dr. Mihalko, PhD, is a member of the Campbell Clinic in Memphis Tennessee and an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Tennessee. He is the current chair of the AAOS Biomedical Engineering Committee and is a member of The Knee Society. He has co-authored and co-edited an orthopaedic surgical approach textbook as well as a six volume textbook in arthritis and arthroplasty. He has been married for 15 years to his wife Lori; they have five children who keep them very busy at home.

John W. Sperling, MD

John Sperling completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. His primary clinical and research interest is the treatment of shoulder pathology. He practices at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
