AOA-Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)

The AOA’s Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) identifies orthopaedists who are developing as leaders of the specialty and gives them a glimpse of AOA membership through interaction with orthopaedic leaders. Through exposure to AOA members and AOA programs, Emerging Leaders grow their leadership skills in hopes of continuing to give back to the specialty and society.

Identification for participation in the ELP is a mark of prestige, and those who join the ELP are among a highly select group of orthopaedists who are poised to impact the specialty now and in the future. The benefits of participation include:

  • The opportunity to participate in the Emerging Leadership Forum
  • Access to AOA functions such as the AOA’s Annual Meeting
  • The opportunity to submit a scientific abstract to be presented at the AOA’s Annual Meeting – a great opportunity to demonstrate orthopaedic thought leadership
  • A chance to participate on AOA committees in an ex-officio capacity

Emerging Leadership Forum

Thanks to an infusion of financial support and energy from Medtronic's Spinal and Biologics business, Emerging Leaders has gained an added benefit – the Emerging Leadership Forum. Similar to the AOA-OREF-Zimmer Resident Leadership Forum, the program will run one and one half days prior to the annual meeting.

Eligibility Any PGY-5 can join the program with a written recommendation from a current, active AOA member. One must join withing his/her first five years of practice (PGY-5 through 5th year in practice).  Those who were nominated for AOA membership but did not attain it are encouraged to join the ELP. Automatic eligibility criteria (which means a letter of recommendation is not required) include:

  • Resident Leadership Forum nominees
  • AAOS/OREF/ORS Clinician Scientist Development Program nominees
  • American and Canadian AOA Leadership Fellowship (ABC, ASG, JOA and NATF) participants or applicants

For more information about joining the program, contact AOA at (847) 318-7330 or e-mail info@aoassn.org.

Emerging Leader Advisors The title Emerging Leader Guide has been changed to Emerging Leader Advisor, but the scope of this benefit remains the same. Emerging Leader Advisors explain the value of the AOA and encourage active participation by Emerging Leaders. Emerging Leader Advisors are available to Emerging Leaders after their 5th year in practice. To be eligible for an advisor, the Emerging Leader must have been in the Emerging Leader Program for at least one year and have attended one AOA event.

Continuing participation In order to remain in the Emerging Leader program, members must attend one AOA program every three years, submit one abstract for poster presentation every three years, and pay their dues. Additionally, Emerging Leaders have the opportunity to sit on an AOA committee in an ex-officio capacity if desired.

Dues Emerging Leaders are charged a fee of $100 per year. Dues cover a portion of the administrative and program costs. Residents and fellowship participants do not have to pay dues.
