The AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series

Supported by Merck, Inc., Stryker Corporation, Synthes (U.S.A.), and DePuy Orthopaedics

To empower and amplify the skills of orthopaedic surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), in conjunction with Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, presents a program that brings the critical issues of leadership to the forefront of consideration. This program delivers on the AOA's objective: to develop leaders in orthopaedics by providing the tools and resources needed to lead more effectively, for the benefit of orthopaedics and the patient.

The course helps orthopaedists think and act productively inside and outside the practice setting and gives participants an opportunity to learn about leadership as it relates to business issues, community involvement, advisory appointments and governance affairs.

Module 3
Understanding Successful Leadership, Governance and Power

Module 3 discusses trends in governance and the evolution of boards of directors. Participants gain a better understanding of fiduciary obligations and how even non-profit boards are tightening processes to avoid litigation. Leaders are given methods to convert crisis into opportunity by understanding personal competencies, improving deficiencies and leveraging strengths in a variety of environments. Harnessing and applying power in organizations is demonstrated with interactive case studies that show how to effectively take a program from an unsupported idea or initiative to a valuable organizational offering.
