Association Question and Answer

What is the AOA's mission?
To identify, develop, engage and recognize leadership to further the art and science of orthopaedics.

When was the AOA founded and by whom?
The AOA was founded in 1887 by three orthopaedists: V.P. Gibney, MD, Newton M. Shaffer, MD and A.J. Steele, MD.

How many members does the AOA have?
The AOA has approximately 1,300 members.

How is the AOA different from other orthopaedic organizations?
Unlike other orthopaedic associations that primarily focus on continuing medical education, advocacy and subspecialty issues, the AOA focuses on leadership and academic issues facing the specialty via its diverse Community of Leaders . Contributions to the AOA are made by the members and for the members. Though the AOA encourages its members to serve other organizations, the AOA's Community of Leaders fosters an environment in which leaders themselves are served.

What is the AOA's impact on the larger orthopaedic community?
The AOA serves as a voice for the entire orthopaedic community, addressing and confronting issues that pose challenges to orthopaedists. The AOA's programs are designed to include all orthopaedists – even those that are not AOA members, offering benefits to the entire orthopaedic community.

What types of products or services does the AOA offer?
The AOA offers Leadership Fellowships, leadership development courses, awards/recognition programs and an annual meeting.

Why is the AOA qualified to offer such programs?
As the oldest orthopaedic organization in the world, the AOA serves as a thought leader for the orthopaedic community. The AOA has been an integral force in developing orthopaedic groups that directly impact physicians. The AOA has founded the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, among others. The AOA has always been the leader and will continue to lead though example.

What type of qualifications should a physician have to be deemed representative of the AOA?
To become an AOA member, candidates are required to have practiced orthopaedics for at least five years, achieved certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery or accepted as an orthopaedic fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and demonstrated superior scientific and professional achievement. AOA members are committed to the specialty as a whole, and are seen as leaders in thought and action.

How does one apply for membership?
Candidates for AOA membership are nominated by AOA members annually. The Membership Committee reviews the nominations and presents a formal candidate roster to AOA members and the AOA Executive Committee for final approval.

How will the AOA change to accommodate new needs of its orthopaedic audience?
As orthopaedics continues to evolve, the AOA will look to its Community of Leaders to bring new, critical issues of orthopaedics and leadership to the attention of the AOA. As it has in the past, the AOA will confront issues by making public position statements, creating programs and offering insight for the benefit of the entire orthopaedic community.
