Scott D. Boden, MD
Currently Second President-Elect, Dr. Boden will serve as AOA
First President-Elect from July 2012 - June 2013.
Scott D. Boden, MD is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The
Emory University School of Medicine and Director, The Emory
Orthopaedics & Spine Center, Atlanta, GA. Dr. Boden's
specialties are Spinal Disorders and Spinal Surgery.
Dr. Boden currently serves as Chair of the AOA's Audit
Committee. He has also served on the Critical Issues
Committee, the Finance Committee, American-British-Canadian
Traveling Felloship Committee and the Distinguished Contributions
to Orthopaedics Awards Committee. Dr. Boden was one of the
originators of the Emerging Leaders Program and served on that
committee for five years. Dr. Boden also served as Program
Chair for the 2005 AOA Annual Meeting in Huntington Beach, CA.
Dr. Boden is also a member of the AAOS; American Society
for Bone and Mineral Research; Eastern Orthopaedic Association;
North American Spine Society; International Society for Study of
the Lumbar Spine, and Orthopaedic Research Society. He is
Co-Editor-in-Chief of Seminars in Spine Surgery and Deputy Editor
of the international journal, Spine.
A medical graduate in 1986 from University of Pennsylvania
School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Boden completed his
residency at George Washington University Medical Center,
Washington DC in 1991 and his fellowship at Case Western
Reserve University Hospital, Cleveland, OH in 1992.
Dr. Boden is the recipient of a number of awards, including the
Eugene T. Nordby Award from the International Intradiscal Therapy
Society in 1997. Other awards of distinction include:
- Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award Presented by American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 1999
- The Marshall R. Urist Young Investigator Award Association of
Bone and Joint Surgeons, 1997; the Mayfield Award American
Association of Neurological Surgeons, 1997
- Outstanding Research Paper Award North American Spine Society,
1994, 1996.
- Dr. Boden has also been awarded the Volvo Award for Outstanding
Spine Research presented by the International Society for Study of
the Lumbar Spine.
Dr. Boden has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on topics
ranging from gene therapy, molecular biology of bone healing,
cellular response to BMPs, bone graft biology and substitutes,
spine fusion, and appropriate use of clinical imaging studies in
Orthopaedics and spine.
