Membership Process Overview

The AOA membership process is highly selective. AOA members nominate candidates according to their achievements in orthopaedics. Each nominee must be seconded by another AOA member.

The AOA membership participates in a Candidate Review Process and the slate of proposed members is voted on by the membership at the AOA Annual Meeting.

Candidates are notified, featured in the winter AOA News, and are inducted at the following Annual Meeting.

Candidates for active membership in the AOA must be:

  • Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery or a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in Orthopaedic Medicine
  • In practice no less than five years at the time membership is approved (Class of 2013 candidates must be in practice no less than five years as of June, 2013)

Experience and leadership in the following domains are also considered:

  • Professional Positions Held
  • Scholarships and Research
  • Leadership in Orthopaedics and Medicine
  • AOA activity may also be considered

The AOA is a wonderful opportunity where leaders and developing leaders across the different orthopedic subspecialties can benefit from each other's experiences in dealing with the challenges of the evolving landscape in which we practice.
