Association of Southeast Asian Nations Traveling Fellowship

During even-numbered years, a group of up to eight Fellows from Southeast Asia are invited to participate in a tour of orthopaedic centers across the US, often concluding at the AOA Annual Meeting. Each of the following Southeast Asian nations are invited to send a Fellow:

  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Mayanmar
  • Brunei

The AOA coordinates tours focused on a particular region of the United States. The regions rotate from tour to tour. The AOA doea not send orthopaedists on an exchange tour to any of the ASEAN nations.

Historical Information

In 1992, the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association created the ASEAN Traveling Fellowship. Two Fellows were selected to tour the United States. Since then, the fellowship has grown to include more nations in the tour.

2016 ASEAN Hosts

As a leadership organization, the AOA coordinates the logistics for the AOA Traveling Fellowships. Host institutions have a significant impact on the success of the fellowships and provide a compelling experience for the Fellows. Thank you to the 2016 ASEAN hosts. Without your support, this tour would not be possible.

Hosting Information

ASEAN hosts are encouraged to use their creativity to plan a unique and exciting experience that will allow the visiting fellows to grow in their leadership skills, research, and career goals. Hosts may also take advantage of any unique environments that they may have either academically or historically.

The Traveling Fellowship Taskforce also encourages members to “group host,” with several institutions in one area sharing the hosting duties and costs, thus adding to the diversity of the tour. Hosts will be asked to:

  • Identify a key contact person at the host institution for the AOA
  • Coordinate academic, leadership and social programs
  • Send the AOA a finalized, detailed itinerary six weeks prior to the tour
  • Meet the ASEAN Fellows when they arrive in the local area.  If the fellows fly in/out of the region, fellows must be transported to/from the airport to the designated hotel or meeting location
  • Provide housing, meals and ground transportation for the ASEAN Fellows, as well as covering the costs for these arrangements
