Dear Dr. XXX,

Welcome to the Emerging Leaders Program! The AOA is excited that you've chosen to take advantage of this opportunity, which will position you for leadership in personal, career and civic endeavors.

This, the first edition of the Emerging Leaders Newsletter, will discuss the 'goings on' of the organization and will inform you of opportunities to participate in AOA events. As the Emerging Leaders Program continues to take shape, we'll inform you of specific Emerging Leaders activities - such as debates and discussion forums on the AOA Leadership Knowledge Exchange and how to contact an advisor.

Your most immediate opportunity for involvement in the AOA is to attend the AOA's 117th Annual Meeting this June in Boston, MA. We hope that you will consider attending. If you are unable to join us, please consider attending the AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series or participate in online discussions which will begin in the fall. For information on either program, please visit www.aoassn.org.

Again, we are pleased that you accepted our invitation to the Emerging Leaders Program. Stay tuned for additional opportunities for involvement.

Sincerely,

Scott D. Boden, MD
Chair, Emerging Leaders Committee

Reminder - As a benefit of the Emerging Leaders Program, you are invited to the Resident & Committee Acknowledgement Reception from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, held before the Annual Meeting.  The reception provides networking opportunities and a chance to meet face-to-face with leaders in orthopaedics.  Expect your invite to arrive in the mail next week!

Introduced in 2004, the AOA now offers an online tool, 'Resource & Knowledge Exchange', to provide AOA members and Emerging Leaders opportunities to participate and interact within the AOA Community of Leaders.  Online participants can meet and collaborate, trade thoughts and perspectives, and essentially bridge the gap between face-to-face meetings with one another. Discussion forums, document archives and a news section are all available to each community.

The Emerging Leaders community is scheduled to launch in Fall, 2004.  In order to better serve your needs, the AOA would like to get your feedback on what you would like to discuss and/or view within your online community.  Please take a few moments to answer the survey below and hit "Submit" only; please do not reply.

1.
Would you be interested in participating in the ELP online community?
Yes
No

2. What subjects would you like to explore within the ELP online community?

3. What kinds of things do you think will be most helpful and engaging for you with the AOA Leadership Knowledge Exchange? List specific resources or tools you would find valuable.

AOA~KELLOGG LEADERSHIP SERIES PROGRAM

The AOA and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management recently launched the AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series.  The three-module series was developed to help orthopedists think and act productively inside and outside the practice setting and to give participants an opportunity to learn about leadership as it relates to business issues, community involvement, advisory appointments and governance affairs.

The course does not focus on orthopaedics, but rather on leadership as a whole. Curriculum is based on current events and problematic issues facing today's leaders - lessons learned can easily be applied to your practice or program.  Regardless of career status, the high-level programs are designed to be useful for all orthopedists.

The course has proven to be a great success with nine out of 10 Module One attendees saying the course filled a great need in orthopaedic education, and look forward to attending future modules.

Registration for Module One, to be held November 12 - 14, 2004, is now open.  Register today for the AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series via the AOA Web site at www.aoassn.org.  For additional information, please contact Laura Kramer at Kramer@aoassn.org or at 847.318.7330.
