Welcome to the fall issue of the ELP online newsletter!  In addition to your ELP member-guide, this newsletter is designed to serve as a resource, providing you with information about the current activities of the AOA.

The AOA is committed to shaping future leaders of orthopaedics and strives to provide you with the necessary tools and information that will elevate your leadership capabilities and impact the specialty.

If you have any suggestions about what you would like the AOA to cover in the next issue of this newsletter, please email Nikki Reuter at reuter@aoassn.org.

AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series –Take Part in this Valuable Series!

As you embark into the crucial phases of your orthopaedic career, it is important to acquire the skills necessary to become a successful orthopaedic leader. The AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series is designed to help you do exactly this.

The AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series modules are designed to empower and amplify the skills of orthopaedic surgeons by providing the tools and resources needed to lead more effectively. The engaging, dynamic and interactive modules provide the context for leadership in the lives of orthopaedists, regardless of career status.

Module One provides a baseline for effective leadership. Participants learn how to formulate and implement strategy, develop an organization’s mission, vision, and values statements and how to catalyze others to act. Leaders study decision making processes and are educated to understand decision making dynamics and how to persuade and influence others. Case studies based on General Electric, NASA programs, and high performance racing car teams put theory into action in this interactive leadership primer.

Module Two offers training in human resources and negotiations.  Participants are provided with a framework for building high performance cultures by using organizational development, effective personnel selection, development and maintenance of high performance personnel, and by appraising and rewarding through fairness and justice. Negotiation is a highlight of this course, challenging leaders to “expand the pie” to create win-win results, while understanding their best alternative to a negotiated agreement (BATNA). Case studies on salary adjustments, water conservation, and contract negotiation make for strong, lasting illustrations.

Module Three discusses trends in governance and the evolution of boards of directors. Participants gain a better understanding of fiduciary obligations and how even non-profit boards are tightening processes to avoid litigation. Leaders are given methods to convert crisis into opportunity by understanding personal competencies, improving deficiencies and leveraging strengths in a variety of environments. Harnessing and applying power in organizations is demonstrated with interactive case studies that show how to effectively take a program from an unsupported idea or initiative to a valuable organizational offering.

As your career takes off, you may be chosen for a role that you are capable of fulfilling, however your role could be even better served if as a physician leader, you better understood the context for leadership and how to make business decisions.

The AOA~Kellogg Leadership Series is a unique opportunity to submerge yourself in timely, critical discussions with established orthopaedic leaders in both lecture and team settings.  Modules are taught by highly skilled faculty from the #1 business school in the U.S. Course evaluations have confirmed the value of the Modules off-set the cost and weekend spent away from home.

Stay ahead of the game and take advantage of this leadership series during the early stages of your career! For more information or to register today, visit http://www.aoassn.org/LeadershipAcademicKelloggTop.asp or call AOA Headquarters at 847.318.7330.
