Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Traveling Fellowship

ASEAN Traveling Fellows to Visit West Coast in 2012
by Kevin P. Black, MD - ASEAN Fellowship Chair

Are you interested in learning about new approaches to orthopaedic disease management? Would you like for your residents to learn about different perspectives on everything from trauma to scoliosis? Would you value the opportunity to develop friendships with outstanding orthopaedic surgeons from across the globe?

If the answer to these questions is yes, you should consider volunteering to host the 2012 ASEAN Traveling Fellows during their summer tour of the western United States.

Six outstanding orthopaedic surgeons have been chosen by their national orthopaedic societies in a highly competitive process. The ASEAN fellows represent the following countries:

  • Malaysia
  • Indonesia
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

Their Tour will begin in early June and conclude at the 2012 AOA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, from June 27-30.

The host's responsibility will be to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and a rewarding academic experience for both the host institution and the traveling fellows.

Hosts typically take the opportunity to share their most valued cultural activities and attractions of the local community. The fellows' travel and lodging expenses will be provided for by their home countries.

If you have hosted traveling fellows in the past, you know what a rewarding experience it can be. If you haven't, please consider volunteering to host our 2012 ASEAN fellows. Should you have questions or want more information, please e-mail fellowships@aoassn.org.

Overview

In even-numbered years, a group of six Fellows from Southeast Asia participate in a tour of orthopaedic centers across the US, concluding with the AOA Annual Meeting. Each of the following Southeast Asian nations sends a Fellow:

  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

The AOA coordinates tours focused on a variety of regions across the US, but does not send orthopaedists on an exchange tour to any of the ASEAN nations.

Historical Information

In 1992, the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association created the ASEAN Traveling Fellowship. Two Fellows were selected to tour the US. Since that time, Fellows have toured orthopaedic centers across the US, concluding their tour at the AOA Annual Meeting.
