Austrian-Swiss-German (ASG) Traveling Fellowship

Overview

The ASG tour promotes international travel for the exchange of medical ideas.

  • During even years, two Americans, one Canadian, and one British orthopaedic surgeons tour orthopaedic centers in Austria, Switzerland and Germany for three to four weeks.
  • During odd years, one Austrian, one Swiss and two German orthopaedic surgeons tour orthopaedic centers in North America for a three to four week period.

Historical Information

In 1978, the Austrian, Swiss and German Orthopaedic Associations were the first to sponsor a tour of four young orthopaedic surgeons who traveled to Britain, the US and Canada. Initially, the tours in America were annual and arranged with the assistance of individual American and Canadian orthopaedists.

In 1984, Hans Mau, MD, chairman of the Austrian-Swiss-German Fellowship Commission, asked the AOA to assist in the coordination of the hosts and travel arrangements for the 1986 tour. Dr. Mau's request was approved by the AOA Executive Committee.

Eligibility Information

ASG Traveling Fellows must be:

  • ABOS certified
  • No older than 49 years of age the year immediately preceding the tour

The ASG fellowship was a unique and valuable personal and professional experience. Everything about it, the educational and cultural exchange, the sightseeing, and the socializing, was so much fun. I was especially excited to host the 2011 ASG fellows here in Omaha. It was great to see some of the people I had met on my trip, repay their hospitality, and show off our city and university.
