Gifts of cash and/or stock made by the end of our five-year campaign, June 2021, will allow AOA leadership to support programs more immediately, addressing current and near-future needs and developments. 

blended gift, that includes a planned gift component along with a gift of cash and/or stock, will enable donors to provide a more substantial gift over an extended time frame. 

Gifts of Cash

 At any given time, a one-time gift helps the AOA leverage collective and individual leadership to address critical issues facing orthopaedics.

Gifts of Stock

Gifts of stock often provide greater tax-benefits than other monetary gifts because appreciated stock is not recognized as a capital gain. Giving a gift of publicly-traded stock that has increased in value and that you have owned for more than one year may provide greater tax benefits than giving cash. All gifts of stock are tax-deductible. 

Your broker can assist you in making a gift of stock via a direct transfer to The American Orthopaedic Assocation.  

How a Gift of Stock Benefits You

Your charitable income tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the current value over the original cost of the stock. You may also save by not incurring brokerage fees because you are transferring ownership rather than selling the stock.

Honoring an Orthopaedic Leader

The AOA offers mentees the opportunity to formally honor and champion a Fellow of The American Orthopaedic Association (FAOA) for his/her leadership and teaching of faculty/professional partners, fellows, and residents.

New donor groups work together to make a commitment of new gifts of cash or pledges totaling a minimum of $75,000 by January 31 for June recognition.

If you'd like to honor your mentor (who must be a FAOA), please: 
  • Notify the AOA of intention to nominate a person by October 1 annually
  • You will then serve as Champion of this effort, by:
    1. serving as the lead to identify and cultivate gifts from others whom the honored leader has mentored or otherwise impacted in a positive or meaningful way
      • For example, grateful patients may be part of the donor group supporting the honored orthopaedic leader
    2. making a new donation/gift amounting to half the required amount ($37,500) to provide said recognition to the honored leader
  • If funds are not received in full by January 31, then donations will roll for the following Annual Leadership Meeting.
  • The AOA will work with you to help you raise a matching gift. 

Your Honoree will receive privileges and appreciation, including:

  • Honoree will be notified of the award once the minimum giving threshold has been reached.
  • Honoree will be recognized during the AOA’s Annual Leadership Meeting. This will add to the cachet of his/her reputation. 
  • Honoree will be announced and recognized during the Opening Ceremony of the AOA's Annual Leadership Meeting

Honoree and one guest will receive complimentary registration for the following events in the year she/he is being honored:
  • Annual Leadership Meeting 
  • All Member Social Event
  • C. McCollister Evarts Resident Leadership Forum and Emerging Leaders Forum during the Annual Leadership Meetings

Additionally, the honoree and one guest will be invited to attend the Presidents Dinner and Reception.

For Donors Age 65+

Due to accounting issues, the AOA can only accept donations through the following methods for donors age 65+ 
  • Bequests through wills

    • For non-cash gifts resulting from bequests, the personal representative will be asked to sell the property and remit the proceeds to the AOA

  • Paid and new life insurance polices with an irrevocable beneficiary designation (with the AOA designated as beneficiary)

Multi-Year Pledges

Gifts can be made during a timeframe of one to five years. If you're interested in making a multi-year pledge, please contact the AOA at donations@aoassn.org or call (847) 318-7489.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts make valuable contributions to AOA programs and provide possible reductions in income, gift, and estate taxes. 
  • Name AOA as a beneficiary of cash in your will, retirement plan, financial account, and/or fully-paid insurance policy.

  • The AOA can also accept charitable lead trusts and charitable remainder trusts where the AOA is beneficiary and the donor is the trustee. 

Additional Methods

  • IRA and retirement beneficiary designations
  • Royalties and distribution rights
  • Certain gifts of real estate/remainder interests in real property
    • The AOA will consider the acceptance of such gifts; no gift of real estate shall be accepted without clear title, evaluation of salability, lack of third-party interests, and environmental scrutiny (where applicable/for commercial real estate assets)
