APEX Leadership Cohort Begins Their 10-Month Long Journey

This month, 40 orthopaedic surgeons will embark on a 10-month-long educational experience developed by The AOA and the University of Southern California (USC) Marshall School of Business Executive Education. The APEX Leadership Certificate Program blends in-person and distance-learning formats to provide essential leadership development skills in a cohort learning format.

Three APEX ambassadors, recognized orthopaedic leaders who were involved in the development of the APEX curriculum, are Theodore Miclau, III, MD, FAOA; Mary I. O'Connor, MD, FAOA; and Theodore W. Parsons, III, MD, FACS, FAOA. In January, these ambassadors will join the USC faculty to welcome attendees and give a program overview. They will participate alongside attendees to help link the executive management lessons to the specific work environment of the physicians.

Also at the January session, USC faculty will distribute a pre-course assessment tool examining participants’ existing vs. ideal organizational culture. An additional leadership self-assessment will identify gaps for improvement in the individual’s leadership style. Both tools will drive the cohort’s learning for the year.
