ABC hosts plan a unique and exciting experience that will allow the visiting fellows to grow in their leadership skills, research, and career goals. Hosts may also take advantage of any unique environments they may have either academically or historically.

Host Responsibilities

Hosts will be asked to:

  • Identify a key contact person at the host institution to liaise with AOA Headquarters.
  • Coordinate academic, leadership and, social programs.
  • Send the AOA a finalized, detailed itinerary six weeks prior to the tour.
  • Meet the ABC Fellows when they arrive in the local area. If the fellows fly in/out of the region, fellows must be transported to/from the airport to the designated hotel or meeting location.
  • Provide housing, meals, and ground transportation for the ABC Fellows, as well as covering the costs for these arrangements.

Group Hosting

The Traveling Fellowship Subcommittee also encourages members to “group host,” with several institutions in one area sharing the hosting duties and costs, thus adding to the diversity of the tour.

Charles A. Rockwood Recognition

Dr. Rockwood is an alumni of the ABC Traveling Fellowship program and speaks often of the strong impact the experience had on his career. As Professor and Chairman Emeritus, Orthopaedic Department, and Director, Shoulder Service at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, he worked closely with DePuy Orthopaedics in the development of the Global Shoulder Arthroplasty System and a post-operative home-based exercise rehabilitation program for the shoulder. In addition, he has led his team of investigators in developing the Global Fx Prosthesis with DePuy specifically designed to treat fractures of the shoulder, the Conservative Anatomical Prosthesis, and the Cuff Tear Arthropathy Head. Dr. Rockwood has authored numerous journal articles and audiovisual presentations and has served as editor of several textbooks, including seven editions of the three-volume text, Fractures and four editions of the two-volume text, The Shoulder. Charles A. Rockwood, Jr., MD, FAOA has made a donation via his estate in the amount of $150,000, with $125,000 in support of the AOA’s American-British-Canadian (ABC) Traveling Fellowship.
