Organization Strategies for a Competitive Advantage & Inflection Mapping, by Shon Hiatt, PhD

April 12-13, 2024, USC Campus, Los Angeles, CA

AOA Faculty:

Joseph J. Hoegler, MD, FAOA, Henry Ford Health, Detroit, MI

Douglas W. Lundy, MD, MBA, FAOA, St. Luke’s University Health Network, Bethlehem, PA

Selina Poon, MD, FAOA, Shriners for Children, Pasadena, CA

Organization Strategies for a Competitive Advantage

What are the best ways to expand your healthcare business and gain a competitive edge in today’s dynamic and globalized world? How can you leverage your core competencies and resources to create value for your customers and stakeholders/shareholders? How can you avoid the common pitfalls and risks that come with diversification, vertical integration, and geographic expansion?

This course will help you answer these questions and more by introducing you to the concepts and frameworks of corporate and competitive dynamics strategy. You will learn how to analyze your own firm’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of your competitors, using the resource-based view strategy framework. You will also learn how to evaluate the opportunities and challenges of moving beyond your current markets, whether horizontally (by offering new products or services), vertically (by controlling more stages of the value chain), or geographically (by entering new regions or countries).

You will explore the various motives and drivers for corporate expansion, such as achieving organizational advantages, overcoming organizational disadvantages, learning from industry leaders, tapping into growing markets, establishing a first mover advantage, and more. You will also examine the real-world examples of successful and unsuccessful corporate strategies, and learn from their best practices and mistakes.

By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of the strategic decisions that shape the boundaries and performance of your hospital/clinic. You will also have the tools and skills to design and implement a sound corporate strategy that aligns with your vision, mission, and goals.

Inflection Mapping

Discontinuous and disruptive change is the reality of today’s business environment, and the healthcare industry is no exception to this rule. In fact, with COVID and the rise of inflation, the health care industry is at the center of a global Tsunami and survivors know that fundamental transformation will be a necessity. To avoid being blindsided, incumbents must identify the discontinuities that are most likely to threaten their business model. However, chasing every new fad is at best a waste of resources and, at worst, a strategic distraction that prevents renewal and possibly threatens long term survival. But missing a key shift or noticing it too late is equally dangerous. Building upon the corporate strategy session, we will introduce analytical frameworks that systematically identify strategic inflections and understand their implications for strategy.

Managing & Leading Change: Organizational Change Simulation

Building change capability is a management imperative. Given the turbulence in the world today, the ability to effectively manage organizational change is especially critical. Then we will apply it via an online simulation to see if you can turnaround an organization facing change. The simulation focuses on Global Tech, a company fraught with real-world change challenges. Through careful application of change management best practices, you can build stakeholder buy-in and lead the company to success.

In debriefing the simulation, we will identify critical similarities and differences between Global Tech and your organizations/departments. We will focus specifically on how orthopaedic leaders can most effectively convert stakeholder resistance into support for key organizational change initiatives.
