Terrance D. Peabody, MD, FAOA is being recognized as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession for his leadership, mentoring, and lifelong contributions to orthopaedic surgery during his distinguished career. The champions for this effort on his behalf are Rex D. Haydon, MD, PhD, FAOA and Michael A. Simon, MD, FAOA.
Bio
Dr. Peabody is the Edwin Warner Ryerson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also provides care for patients at Lurie Children’s Hospital and is a member of the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center.
A native of southern California, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed his residency training at the University of California, Irvine, and his fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Peabody previously served on the faculty of the University of California, Irvine from 1991 to 1993 and the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine from 1994 to 2011. He was formerly the Simon and Kalt Families Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Peabody is past president of the American Orthopaedic Association, former Chair of the AOA Academic Leadership Committee and Vice-President of the Orthopaedic Residency Committee of the ACGME. He recently completed a ten-year term as a director of the ABOS. Dr. Peabody’s research and clinical expertise focus on the treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft-tissue tumors including limb salvage surgery and functional restoration for adult and pediatric patients. A well-published investigator, Dr Peabody has authored multiple journal articles and book chapters and served as on the editorial board of several publications. Other than musculoskeletal oncology, his professional interests include challenges related to resident and fellow education and the development of a national curriculum around the implementation of a competency-based training program. He and his wife Jane are the proud parents of four children and two granddaughters.

“I was fortunate to recruit Terry Peabody as a fellow from 1990-1991. When he returned to Irvine, California to start an academic program, my patients would keep on asking me “where is Dr. Peabody ?” I would muse to myself “what about me?” In 1994, when I needed a partner , I immediately thought of Terry. He returned to be my partner and subsequent successor as Chief. Terry’s passion for GME is legendary. He became the Chair of the Academic Leadership Group (ALG) of the AOA which was the forerunner of CORD. Terry was singularly the driving force in the formation of CORD before becoming President of the AOA. Terry is the consummate master surgeon and clinician. All of our past fellows continue to ask him for clinical, surgical, personal and career advice.”
