Kevin P. Black, MD, FAOA
Honored as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession

Kevin P. Black, MD, FAOA is being recognized as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession for his leadership, mentoring, and lifelong contributions to orthopaedic surgery during his distinguished career. The champion for this effort on his behalf is C. McCollister (Mac) Evarts, MD, FAOA.

Bio

Dr. Black began serving as interim dean at Penn State College of Medicine in July 2019.

Prior to accepting this role, he was the C. McCollister Evarts Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State College of Medicine and director of the Penn State Health Bone and Joint Institute for 18 years, as well as vice dean of the college’s Regional Medical Campus at University Park.

During his tenure as chair, Hershey Medical Center was consistently named among the nation’s best in orthopaedics by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, clinical activity in the department increased fourfold, the residency program doubled in size and a Center for Orthopaedic Research and Translational Science was created. The department is now ranked 20th in the country in National Institute of Health funding. It was under his leadership that the College of Medicine Regional Medical Campus transitioned into a full medical curriculum, offering innovative and collaborative experiences for medical students.

Dr. Black graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Rochester, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. After six years at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he started and directed the Sports Medicine program, he joined the Penn State College of Medicine and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1993.

He has been named a Distinguished Educator for Penn State, and was the recipient of the Steven and Sharon Baron Leadership Award. He has served in leadership positions on numerous state and national medical organizations, including the executive committee/boards of the American Orthopaedic Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society in 2014 and president of the American Orthopaedic Association in 2015-2016. For the past 29 years, he has been a team physician for the Hershey Bears hockey team, a role he continues in.

The AOA acknowledges Dr. Black’s outstanding contributions to the orthopaedic community and recognizes him as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession.
